Police fed up with tourists driving recklessly

POLICE say they are fed up with attending accidents caused by reckless driving of tourists, after a single car smash injured five people at Glen Aplin yesterday.

Preliminary enquiries revealed the car was driving at high speed and crossed double white lines in an area with limited vision.

The driver, a 27-year-old South Korean national told police he and his friends were running late for work and was attempting to overtake a slow moving vehicle.

The car has subsequently ran off the New England Highway and smashed in to a tree, trapping five people inside and closing the northbound lane of the New England Highway.

Two males aged 22 and 30 were airlifted to Toowoomba Hospital with suspected spinal injuries, after fire crews worked desperately to free them from the overturned vehicle.

Officer in Charge of Stanthorpe Police, Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said witnesses reported seeing the car drive at high speed through Stanthorpe prior to the accident and it was a miracle no one was killed.

Police are yet to lay any formal charges in relation to the accident, as Forensic Crash Units continue their investigations.
