Warwick Police are on the hunt for Volunteers in Policing
WARWICK Police are on the hunt for community-minded volunteers to become the new faces for Volunteers in Policing (VIP).
Senior Constable Wendy Brooks said the VIP program was a great opportunity for people to work with police officers on a variety of tasks.
"We can put people anywhere they have a skill for," Snr Const Brooks said.
"It's a very hands-on role doing anything from fliers to home-security audits."
Snr Const Brooks said volunteers attended three days of training in Toowoomba to learn how to assist crime prevention officers.
"I attend the training with the VIPs and so we get to know what interests and skill sets they have and can place them in those areas," she said.
"It's a really good stepping stone for young people who are wanting to get into the (police) academy, or for those just wanting to give back to the community."
Volunteer Samara Del Marie said she joined the program after hearing about it on radio.
"As soon as I heard it I thought 'that's what I want to do'," Ms Del Marie said.
"I was at a stage of life where I wanted to give back to the community.
"I love doing it and would recommend it to anyone."
Ms Del Marie said she had learned a lot through in the program, and will remain a volunteer even though she was working. "I really enjoy the public interaction and continuing education."
Snr Const Brooks said the options were endless depending on the volunteer's skill base.
Applicants will go through an interview process and state and national criminal history checks.
