Police allege pistol found in car after a 150kmh chase

A PISTOL was allegedly found on the floor of a stolen car when it was finally stopped after a dramatic police chase on the Sunshine Coast.

The drama began at Tiaro, between Gympie and Maryborough, about 3.50pm on Saturday when police tried unsuccessfully to intercept the driver after discovering the car he was driving was stolen.

He was then followed south for more than an hour, with several police vehicles remaining well behind as the car reached speeds of 150kmh.

A second attempt was made to stop the vehicle at Palmview but it also failed and the man continued to speed towards Brisbane.

Police slowed highway traffic to ensure the public's safety before tyre deflation "stingers" were laid across the highway at the Caloundra interchange.

The device did its job, puncturing the vehicle's two front tyres, but the man continued to drive along the highway until the tyres wore down to the rims and police were finally able to stop the disabled vehicle just past Meridan Plains.

During a search of the car, police allege they found a pistol on the vehicle's passenger-side floor.

A 26-year-old Deception Bay man has been charged with six offences, including dangerous driving, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm.

He was remanded in custody to face Maroochydore Magistrates Court today.
