UPDATE 7.30AM: Police are continuing patrols around the University of Southern Queensland after a phone call to the switchboard closed the Clive Berghofer Recreation Centre due to an alleged threat.

The popular gym was closed shortly after 5pm Monday after a caller phoned in reports of a person threatening an incident inside the centre.

Police and USQ security crews locked it down with people inside who were released about an hour later after investigations found the threat had passed.

USQ director of corporate communications Dr Aidan Burke last night told The Chronicle the centre had been closed as a precaution and confirmed no-one had been harmed.

Police conducted patrol sweeps of the campus last night and returned this morning.

Toowoomba police Sergeant Renee Crowe said officers remained on scene and investigations would continue today.

She said initial inquiries suggested the phone call had been a fake threat.

MONDAY 7.45PM: A phone call to the University of Southern Queensland has been identified as the trigger behind the Clive Berghofer Recreation Centre being closed due to a police incident.

Police will patrol the campus overnight following an incident which closed the popular centre this afternoon.

USQ director of corporate communication and public relations Dr Aidan Burke said the patrols would increase tonight and allayed concerns of the public.

"We had an incident here around about 5pm when we received a phone call to the university," he said.

"As a consequence of that, we initiated a police incident here at the Clive Berhgofer Recreation Centre and as a consequence of that, while police investigations are under way, we have closed the centre for tonight and it will reopen tomorrow morning.

"Throughout the night, I understand that we will increase our security and police patrols in the area.

"It is certainly nothing that the public need to be concerned about at this stage.

"It is an ongoing police investigation."

People were seen leaving more than an hour after the centre was closed as security descended on the centre, but did not appear alarmed or threatened.

Dr Burke said the USQ security protocols in dealing with critical incidents meant parts of the campus could be locked down and isolated quickly when needed.

"We have particular protocols that we enact when these sorts of things happen across the university and we're able to close particular areas as soon as possible, then we initiate whatever action we need to happen until police arrive on campus," he said.

"We try and keep people as calm as possible.

"In this particular incident it was not a life-threatening situation."

Police will investigate the call made to the university and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Dr Burke said while not uncommon for calls to be made to universities or schools, tonight's incident was a reminder that police do treat the incidents seriously and investigate them fully.

"I think the public should be aware that in many instances police can track and trace those particular calls," he said.

"I imagine they will be doing the same in this particular situation."
