Operation North Taurus charges motorists on NSW border
POLICE have been out in force over the last two days as part of a joint operation with multiple agencies targeting motorists crossing the New South Wales border.
Operation North Taurus saw more than 50 officers take part in the two-day operation across multiple locations.
Separate sites were set up on the New England Hwy at Wallangarra, Cunningham Hwy at Inglewood and Leichhardt Hwy at Goondiwindi.
Sergeant Greg Moore of Texas Police was at the Wallangarra site and said the operation was aimed at encouraging motorists to do the right thing.
"We've had a positive result from the operation with only a few drug-driving offences and log book checks," Sgt Moore said.
"We targeted this area in particular to make sure motorists were obeying the 60kmh zone as they come through town."
Roadside drug and alcohol tests were conducted as part of the operation, with methamphetamine the most common drug detected.
Officers from Queensland Transport and Toowoomba Stock and Rural Crime Investigation conducted heavy vehicle checks and biosecurity checks on motorists transporting livestock.
Inglewood Police officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Matthew Shaw co-ordinated the joint operation that saw a steady stream of motorists intercepted by police.
"We had about 15 officers at each site," Snr Sgt Shaw said.
"Over the two days we conducted more than 2000 breath tests. The main objective was to have a simultaneous operation in the area."
