Police officer stood down after allegedly drink driving

A CENTRAL region police constable has been stood down over allegations he drove while more than three times the limit in Airlie Beach while off duty.

Mackay Police District Superintendent Bruce McNab said it was "very disappointing".

"The police service takes a very firm view on the professional conduct of our officers both on and off duty," Supt McNab said.

The 30-year-old constable, who was yesterday suspended from official duty, was now the subject of a disciplinary investigation.

It is alleged he drove a vehicle while over the legal alcohol limit on Sunday night in Airlie Beach.

A police spokesperson said this did not mean that the allegations against the officer had been substantiated.

The officer will face Proserpine Magistrates Court on January 4 next year for driving under the influence of liquor.

"As police we're role models in our community and the community has very high expectations that we will uphold very high standards of behaviour both personally and professionally," Supt McNab said.

However had to be tempered with the realisation that officers were human, he added.

"Police, like members of the community, have personal circumstances, that they have families," Supt McNab said.

"It is a balancing act, but it is overridden by a need that the community sees our organisation as professional and transparent."

Supt McNab said the community had to have confidence in its police officers to maintain high standards.

"It's an expectation not just of the community but of the organisation itself," he said.
