Police seize $1.5m in weed in highway drug busts

MORE than 80kg of marijuana with a street value of $1.5 million has been taken off the streets in just a week.

Police found 56kg of cannabis - worth $1 million - hidden in a vehicle stopped for a random breath test on the Newell Hwy just south of Goondiwindi in New South Wales last week.

It comes after 24kg of the drug worth half a million dollars was seized on November 20 from a vehicle travelling the same stretch of highway.

"Within a week we have cleared 80-odd kilograms of cannabis with an estimated street value of in excess of $1.5 million," Barwon Inspector Robert Dunn said,

"This is a warning police will stop and search a vehicle, anytime of day or night."

Two men, a 30-year-old and 37-year-old, were charged with supplying a commercial quantity of an illegal drug, dealing with property suspected of being the proceeds of crime and possessing a prohibited drug in relation to the latest bust.
