Police set to boost new year patrols

WARWICK residents heading out on the town for New Year's Eve are being urged to stay safe and remember that one punch can kill.

Warwick police Sergeant Gary Beling said police are stressing the "One Punch Can Kill" message this year, in the wake of a violent Saturday night in Brisbane's CBD last weekend.

"Brisbane is larger and has more people, which leads to more violence," Sergeant Beling said.

"We're urging Warwick residents to remember that one punch can kill."

According to Sergeant Beling, the last few New Year's Eves have been relatively quiet.

"Last year wasn't too bad," he said. "We only had a few minor incidents."

Sergeant Beling said those heading out on New Year's Eve in Warwick should plan their night in advance.

"We're urging people to have a plan B or a designated driver this New Year's Eve," he said.

"Please don't drink and drive."

Party-goers on New Year's Eve should be mindful of an increased police presence Sergeant Beling said.

"We'll have extra patrols and extra police on duty," he said.

"Foot patrols and mobile units will also be used on New Year's Eve."

Warwick police are hoping to never see the level of violence that occurred in Brisbane last Saturday night.

Violence in the state's capital last weekend resulted in the death of 38-year-old Jason Toby, who was injured after trading blows with a stranger on Sunday morning in Brisbane's CBD.

The incident was one of three serious violent events over the weekend.

On Saturday night a 19-year-old man was glassed in the face at the Family Nightclub in Fortitude Valley, receiving cuts to his cheek.

A 37-year-old man was also injured after falling down a flight of stairs following an altercation with a staff member at the Orient early on Sunday morning.

Sergeant Beling said people need to mindful of the dangers of a night out.

"The biggest drama is that one night out can have consequences that last a lifetime," he said.
