WHERE TO VOTE: 19 Southern Downs polling booths
AFTER eight weeks of campaigning the Federal Election is finally here.
Voters who haven't posted in their ballot papers or are yet to visit a polling place will have until 6pm today to lodge their vote.
LNP candidate David Littleproud is a favourite to takeover from Bruce Scott who will retire from the safe seat of Maranoa.
At the 2013 election, Mr Scott retained his seat by a margin of 72.3%, compared to 27.7% to Labor candidate Nick Cedric-Thompson after preferences.
Senate rules have changed to allow for optional preferential voting, with more than 26 parties and 19 independent candidates entering the race at this election.
Voters can choose to either vote above the line, numbering at least six boxes in order of their party preference, or below the line numbering at least 12 individual candidates in order of their preference.
Electoral commissioner Tom Rogers said it was important to take care in filling out both ballot paper correctly.
"Instructions are provided on the top of each ballot paper, but if you make a mistake, just ask a polling official for a replacement ballot paper and start again," Mr Rogers said.
