Polo carnival hailed as one of the best

TAMWORTH-based player Earl Herbert was playing in his first carnival as part of a Goondiwindi team at the weekend and finished a winner.

In the final, he joined with David Coulton, Sam Coulton and Derek Gilmore to win the final five goals to two-and-a-half.

Downs Silvershop made the final with the team of Brodie Donovan, Peter Grimes, Hayden O'Leary and Max O'Leary.

Herbert said it was great to play with the Coultons from the Goondiwindi club.

"I have mainly played with the Gunnedah club," he said.

In the final of the Sapphire Shield, Downs Hy-Feeds won with the team of Gary Hoey, Eustie Hill, Andy Gilmore and Russell May after a 4-3 final win against the Downs Black Toyota team.

Downs Polo Club secretary Jason Denny said this year's carnival was one of the best in recent years. "We had teams from as far as Gympie and North Star," he said.

Current Australian player Will Gilmore played in the carnival and was one of the two umpires for the Eagers Shield final.
