Polocrosse goes global in feature film
KEVIN Bradford made the trek from Harden in New South Wales last weekend for the release of the feature film "The Polocrosse Story".
The 80-minute documentary was produced by Ian Withnall and Sharen Kenny from Palatine Productions and will be used to promote the growing horse sport in Australia.
Bradford is one of the players featured in the film after Palatine Productions "shadowed" him in masters at the 40th annual competition at the Hall carnival in the ACT.
And it isn't as if Bradford needs a master's competition, he mixes it with the best in the sport in open B-grade competition in the South West Slopes zone in New South Wales.
"I first played at the age of 17 or 18 so have been playing 60 years; I played seven tournaments last year, including the nationals in Darwin," he said.
He predominately plays positions two and three in masters and open competition but admits he was no good at one (shooting).
As for how long he will play, he said "that's a good question".
"I hope to be playing in my 80s," he said.
Three of the stars of the film at the release were Bradford, former Australian player and coach Joy Poole and Will Ireland, a junior who was filmed on and off the field at this year's Australian Junior Classic at Albury.
"The film is unbelievable," Bradford said.
"I have just bought four copies to take home."
The best polocrosse facility in the world at Morgan Park is featured with footage from the first World Cup in 2003, from this year's Barastoc Interstate Series and Shell Cup club competition and the Australian Polocrosse Museum at the grounds in Warwick.
Polocrosse Association of Australia president Rodney Geppert was upbeat about the quality of the DVD and reaction to the release.
"Someone bought five copies, one to be sent to New Zealand. This DVD will be purchased by individuals and clubs, it will go international," he said.
"There will be a link on the PAA website from September 1 for people to order the DVD.
"Anyone who owns a horse and is playing another horse sport discipline might watch the DVD and decide to try polocrosse," he said.
At the launch, Warwick Polocrosse Club vice-president Warwick Fraser interviewed Withnall about the production as well as three stars of the feature film. "We really loved producing it," Withnall said.
