Pony club at Killarney still going strong after four decades
THE Killarney and District Hack and Pony Club was formed more than 40 years ago and has been predominately based at the Killarney Showgrounds.
The club holds rallies on the second Sunday of each month. Currently there are 50 members aged from four into the late 40s.
The Killarney club hosts its annual gymkhana in autumn and members travel to the gymkhanas at other clubs.
Starting Friday, the Killarney club has a campdraft coaching clinic over three days which is designed to adapt coaching for each skill level.
Some beginners will be at the camp which is open to all riders, not just pony club members. A vet and a farrier will also give talks.
Club president Brett McKenzie said the aim of the club was to provide top instruction for all levels in all aspects of pony club.
"Our primary aim is identifying our riders' experience and working to ensure continued improvement,” he said.
"We have worked hard to attract instructors with good knowledge in each discipline to steer our riders in the right direction.
Disciplines include flat work, hacking, dressage, showjumping, sporting, barrel racing, campdrafting and instruction on horsemanship and presentation. Last year, the club opened its own clubhouse for the first time.
