Pope's butler sentenced to jail

THE butler to the most powerful man in the Catholic church, Pope Benedict XVI, has been sentenced to 18 months in jail for leaking confidential Vatican papers.

But after Papal Butler Paolo Gabriele was sentenced, a spokesman for the Pope told BBC Gabriele was "very likely" to be pardoned.

BBC News reported prosecutors in the case against Gabriele argued for a three-year jail term, but the sentence was reduced due to "mitigating circumstances".

Accused of stealing and copying the Pope's documents, Gabriele denied the stealing charges but admitted to copying the documents and providing them to an Italian journalist.

BBC reported Gabriele would serve his sentence under Vatican house arrest while awaiting a Papal pardon.
