Popular camping reserve still operated by council

WASHPOOL Camping Reserve will continue to be operated by the Southern Downs Regional Council in 2016.

The council took over the operation of the popular camping reserve at Leslie Dam in June 2015.

Before that it had been overseen by Peter and Joann Guy for more than a decade.

Manager of Corporate Services Peter Gribbin has confirmed the council would undertake a review of operations later in the year.

"Council's intention is to complete a review of operations in the last quarter of this financial year to determine the viability of the reserve," he said.

The council's financial statement at the end of December showed the reserve had a $2192 surplus in operating costs.

The site is owned by the State Government and leased by the council.

Washpool is currently maintained by a contracted caretaker.

Mr Gribbin said the caretaker worked a varying schedule for approximately 25 hours a week.

"The caretaker is not required to maintain a permanent presence, as the reserve is a camping facility, not a caravan park," he said.

"There is a self-registration system operating, whereby campers lodge completed registration envelopes in a secure site for collection by the caretaker."

A decision on whether the council will continue operating Washpool Camping Reserve will be made after the review is completed.
