Popularity sees business owner expand to saleyards
REGULAR visitors at the Pig and Calf Sale were treated to a fresh face today as new business Miss Avocado set up shop for the first time.
Store owner Janelle Hofland was originally running the business from home but decided to go bigger and better in light of customer demand, leading her to the Wednesday morning sale.
"I used to sell them from the front of my yard but I got a message on Facebook from someone asking me to put them out for her husband,” Miss Hofland said.
"I thought why not? I know the auctioneers here and they told me to come down.”
"Everyone was telling me to come here.”
Miss Hofland, who lives on the outskirts of Warwick, sources her avocados and passionfruit from Ravensbourne, saying the growers there had some water to work with, but they too were facing a farming struggle in the future.
"They're not as bad but they're on water restrictions too now,” she said.
"Avocados especially need a lot of water.”
As for how the crowd were responding to the store, Miss Hofland said it was a welcome surprise to many.
"They're buying them and I think more will buy after the auction,” she said.
"I've definitely had people come over and have a look.
"For me, it's a great social day - I get to talk to everyone.”
