Pothole patch-up delayed until water further recedes

THE recent wet weather has given Southern Downs roads a beating with potholes sprouting up all over the region.

A Transport and main Roads spokesman said works had been carried out at the weekend to try and repair some troublesome spots.

"As part of our maintenance contract, RoadTek and Southern Downs Regional Council filled the worst of the potholes over the weekend and will continue carrying out repairs this week," he said.

The spokesman said emergent repairs following the Australia Day weekend flood events had been delayed on a number of roads in the region due to ongoing wet weather. These emergent works are anticipated to be completed by the end of March, weather permitting:

  • Warwick-Killarney Rd
  • Yangan-Killarney Rd
  • Warwick-Allora Rd
  • Albion St
  • Allora-Goomburra Rd
  • Spring Creek Rd

Dalrymple Creek Rd Pavement works repairing flood damage from 2010/2011 events are also currently being carried out on the New England Hwy and Warwick-Allora Rd, with several other reconstruction projects in the region planned.

TMR has received two official damage claims for pothole damage this year that are currently under investigation.

Southern Downs Council Manager of Works Eric Kraak said the council was unable to inspect the damage of council-responsible roads until the waters completely receded.

"At present the flood-waters have not receded enough for us to get a good understanding of the priorities of works required," Mr Kraak said.

"Council will be clearing silt and debris from roads, bridges and culverts and assessing damage in order to prioritise emergent works," Mr Kraak said.

Unlike Moreton Bay Regional Council, who has developed a phone app whereby motorists take a snap of the damage, punch in a few details and off to the council it goes, Southern Downs motorists will have to do it the old-fashioned way - by phone or email.

Mr Kraak said the council had not yet progressed a detailed investigation of the suitability of an app for reporting potholes for the Southern Downs, as larger councils have developed, due to other competing priorities.

To report potholes, phone the council on 4661 0300 or email mail@southerndowns.qld.gov.au.
