Premier Newman exudes calm with new zen approach

BUOYED by recent poll results which showed the LNP government has not slipped further in popularity, Premier Campbell Newman has stepped up his re-branding strategy, moving from boring to serene.

Adopting the political version of the parental I'm-not-angry-at-you-I'm-disappointed voice, Mr Newman danced through this week's parliamentary sitting, his vocal cords no more strained than those of a Play School presenter.

It was up to lieutenants Jeff Seeney, Lawrence Springborg and Scott Emerson to take his place in the political sparring ring, but with all ministers under instruction to "keep calm and stay on message", the government stubbornly stuck to its agenda, with transport and royalties for regions the topics du jour.

While the most recent ReachTEL poll released on Sunday showed the government had stalled its popularity slide, retaining a 51-49 point lead over Labor, Mr Newman's own seat of Ashgrove is still in doubt.

A Together Union commissioned ReachTEL poll released last week found Mr Newman's primary support had dropped to 36.6 per cent.  Kate Jones, whose proposed (second) tilt at Ashgrove remains the worst kept secret in Queensland politics, polled at 51.1 per cent.
