Now is the time to get ready for all of winter's ills

THERE'S an old myth that leaving an onion in a room will prevent people getting sick.

The onion is said to absorb the flu virus along with bacteria that cause other illnesses.

While he's never recommended it, naturopath and nutritionist Michael Smith wouldn't rule it out.

"A lot of home remedies can work," he said.

In the past two weeks, Mr Smith has begun to see patients with flu symptoms. 

He said now was the time to build up the immune system.

Mr Smith said the trick to getting through the winter season was to get over coughs and colds in a few days, rather than a few weeks.

He often saw people who had been sick for several weeks and weren't getting better.

"In that situation, we look at building the immune system," he said.

 "I actually get a lot of success with children."

Mr Smith said for some people, the flu shot could be worth getting.

He said it was important to be well rested and to eat well in the lead-up to flu season.

"People who are often sick can look at vitamin C, zinc and herbs," he said.

 "Basically work on building up your body's ability to fight infections naturally.

"Garlic, honey and ginger are all warming herbal remedies."
