New president takes reins at Allora Rotary club
GRAHAM Hoey was inducted as the 49th president of the Rotary Club of Allora at its annual changeover on Monday, July 13.
Members of the Boonah, Fassifern Valley and Warwick clubs joined Allora members and other guests to celebrate another year of service to the community.
As usual, the event was well attended and a sumptuous meal was provided by Allora's Railway Hotel.
Robyn Draper ably chaired the event and entertained with some "teacherly" directions to "keep order".
Mr Hoey referred to the need for the club to be better known in the community, especially for people to know what it does and stands for.
He suggested banners for public events and hoped they, and other measures, may draw new members to the club.
He thanked immediate past president Andrew Westerman for his year of service and introduced his board for 2015-16.
Ms Draper continues as treasurer; Liz Marshall continues as secretary; Roy Smith as PR; Mr Westerman, membership, David Brown, Rotary Foundation; Ann Balmain continues as Bulletin editor; Norm Tranberg replaces John Gordon as Sergeant-at-arms; and Bill Lester, club administration.
Mr Westerman presented his report for 2014-15.
He mentioned the events and successes of the year, including the transition of the Bush Christmas to Creekside Carols and wished the best for this event into the future.
He thanked Ms Draper for her organisation of the trivia night and Liz Marshal for the catering.
This year, a major beneficiary of club donations was Days for Girls, a Rotary project providing hygiene kits for girls in Africa.
The beef raffle was mentioned as the major fund-raiser, with the major beneficiary this year the Royal Flying Doctor Service, which continues to do outstanding work in remote communities.
Total giving this year was $2500, including donations to the Hamlin Fistula Hospital of Ethiopia, Red Cross, Allora Kindergarten, Allora Playgroup, St Vinnies, Allora Swimming Club, Cancer Council Queensland, the Rotary Nepal Appeal, Anglicare, the Chiros Ministry into prisons, the Salvation Army and Allora Men's Shed.
Mr Westerman said the donations reflected an appropriate balance of local, national and international donations, which has been the theme in the club for many years.
He thanked Ms Draper for her year as treasurer, Ms Marshall for her role as secretary and noted that "these two new members have brought some new vitality to the club".
He also mentioned Ms Balmain who has mentored him in the role of president.
Mr Gordon leaves the role of Sergeant-at-Arms and Mr Westerman thanked him for the many years of service in providing timely, humorous anecdotes and updates.
Rotary partners were also not forgotten, with special mention of Kate Gordon and Vivien Deacon for their "tireless selling of tickets".
Rotary's new theme for 2015-16 will be Be a Gift to the World.
