Price apologises to Peris following defamation settlement

ALICE Springs town councillor and former Country Liberal Party candidate for Lingiari, Jacinta Price, has apologised for accusing former Senator Nova Peris of protecting sexual predators.

The Olympic gold medallist sued Ms Price for defamation following comments she made on Channel 10 which Ms Peris said suggested she participated in the promotion of Aboriginal men who were "known to be perpetrators of sexual violence against women".

"We need to start condemning the perpetrators and we know within Aboriginal Australia there are powerful men who have made it to powerful positions who have never been condemned … Nova Peris has been involved with these particular people," Ms Price told the hosts of Studio 10 last year.

"A lot of Indigenous leaders have been involved, there's been one in the news recently, he has managed, he's a known rapist, who has managed to make it to a powerful position and none of us in the Indigenous community have stood up and condemned these people, we have allowed them to continue on their paths."

In a letter Ms Peris posted to her Facebook page on Thursday, Ms Price said she now acknowledged her comments were "wrong" and apologised.

"I accept that what I said was wrong and was liable to damage your reputation," she wrote.

"I also accept that my comment caused hurt and distress to you and your family. I sincerely apologise to you."

In the post, Ms Peris said she was "happy to say the case has settled".

"As many of you will know earlier this year I commenced defamation proceedings in the Supreme Court of Victoria against Jacinta Price," she said.

"I'm happy to say that the case has settled. Part of the settlement was that Ms Price has sent to me this apology."

Ms Peris thanked her legal team, including Duncan Fine and George Newhouse of the not-for-profit human rights legal service the National Justice Project and barrister Justin Castelan QC.
