Primary student inspired by stars ahead of challenge

SCHOOL SPORT: Olivia Groves has no doubt her favourite netball players are Gretel Tibbett and Laura Geitz.

On Friday, she will be part of the St Mary's School team playing in the Broncos Challenge.

While Geitz has retired, she will be remembered as a top swimmer and athlete at primary school and a defender who first played netball for the Allora State School and then at Scots PGC College before captaining her country and winning a World Cup.

Geitz, Wallabies prop Greg Holmes and Olympic thrower Matthew Denny are three athletes who went through school sport on the Southern Downs to the highest levels in their chosen sports.

On Friday, Olivia is hoping to play goal defence or centre for the St Mary's team in netball at the Scots PGC Courts and the Daily News will be around the grounds to update readers on the action on www.warwickdailynews.com.au.

Isabelle Beer is playing her second season in Broncos Challenge netball.

"I played wing defence last year but want to play centre this year,” she said.

Jack Coleman is a prop playing in his second Broncos Challenge in rugby league.

In club footy, he plays for Collegians at St Mary's Oval.

He is most looking forward to playing against Warwick West State School.

Jack March is in his third season of hockey but will play in the Broncos Challenge for the first time.

He is likely to play midfield for St Mary's at Queens Park on Friday.

James Wooding will play his first football for the season at Queens Park on Friday in the Broncos Challenge. The team is coached by former Warwick Wolves goalie Damien Young.
