Fourth prime win in a row for cattle exhibitors
CATTLE producers Trevyn and Kelly Weier have tasted success for a fourth year in the prime cattle section at the Clifton Show.
The Weiers exhibited the champion steer of the 2016 show, which went on to be named the grand champion local beast of the show at the judging held last Friday.
Their 11-month-old limousin-cross steer, weighing 436kg, sold at auction for $3.72/kg to Clifton butchers, Gillies Meats.
Mr Weier said the steer was one they bred themselves on their 52-hectare property, "Bal-Rowe" at Mt Molar, where they run a small herdof limousin-cross cattle.
"The steer has been on grain since mid-November last year," he said.
"This is the fourth year in a row we have won champion steer at Clifton, and the second time we've won champion local beast."
The exhibitor of the champion vealer was Kellie Gillam, of Wyoming, Nobby, with her limousin-angus cross heifer, weighing 326kg, and selling for $3.68/kg to Gillies Meats.
Miss Gillam said it was her first time in the winner's circle at Clifton, with the heifer she bought and fattened on a grain ration.
The champion heifer was shown by another local exhibitor, Chris Bourke.
The class winner weighed in at 382kg and sold to Carey Brothers for $3.40/kg.
The Logan Family trophy for the most points scored was won by Kellie Gillam.
Prime cattle chief steward Brian Gillam said he was pleased with the quality of the 68 cattle entered.
"There wasn't a bad beast in the yards," he said.
Judge Pat McMahon also congratulated exhibitors on the quality of their cattle, saying they were to be commended on the high standard this year.
