WHILE many who head into the Australian interior do so to work in the mining and resources industry, that's not the only career pathway in the red centre.

The Northern Territory's Department of Correctional Services, is recruiting new and experienced prison officers for its Correctional Centres in Darwin, Alice Springs and Tenant Creek.

It is a dynamic and rewarding career, one that places employees at the front line of a modern and professional correctional organisation charged with changing offending behaviours, successfully integrating prisoners back into the community and making the Northern Territory a safer place for all Territorians and visitors.

If you're interested, you'll need to meet the selection criteria:

Be fit and healthy (confirmed by fitness testing);

Pass literacy and numeracy testing;

Be an effective communicator with a high standard of interpersonal skills;

Be of good character, with high ethical standards and demonstrated integrity;

Pass a criminal history check relevant to the specific requirements of the job;

Be an Australian Citizen or hold permanent resident status;

Posses a current, manual driver's licence (must be transferred to a NT licence);

Posses a high level of maturity and demonstrated life skills;

Demonstrate awareness and appreciation of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture; and,

Show competency in basic computer skills.

Experienced prison officers from other jurisdictions must also meet the selection criteria and if accepted will be offered a position for commencement on the next available Experienced Officer course.

This is a one-to-two week, paid training program to familiarise you with Northern Territory legislation, policies and procedures.

A career as a Prison Officer offers:

Paid training, with nationally accredited qualifications;

Opportunities to learn new skills;

Excellent conditions of employment; and,

Up to seven weeks annual leave.

Prison officers in-training start on a salary of $65,877 (inclusive of allowances) after training.

Experienced Officers start on a salary within the range of $65,877-$72,274 (inclusive of allowances) dependent on years of experience and additional qualifications achieved.
