Project to probe notorious road

THE Eight Mile intersection will be examined in 2012, despite being left off the recently released Queensland Infrastructure Plan.

A State Government spokesman said a project to examine options for the notorious stretch of road had been included in the State Planning Program.

"For 2011-12 and 2012-13 with an estimated start date of January 2012 and continuing for the next 18 months," he said.

"The project will include a review of previously identified options including updating estimates, identification of further alternatives and evaluation and analysis of all these options."

But the Eight Mile intersection wasn't the only glaring omission from the QIP with other crucial projects for the Southern Downs noticeably absent.

Southern Downs Regional councillor Neil Meiklejohn and Member for Southern Downs Lawrence both said the lack of water infrastructure included for the area in the QIP was disappointing and concerning, as was the absence of the Carnarvon Bridge replacement at Stanthorpe.

A State Government spokesman said the QIP would be updated annually.
