Promising Warwick driver attracts interest from Europe
MOTORSPORT: Andy McElrea gave Matt Campbell his start in big time motorsport and tips a massive future for the Warwick driver.
McElrea has run McElrea Racing for the past decade and his teams have won six championships.
"Matt has been with me for 21/2 years and his win in the Porsche Carrera Cup was our first individual drivers' championship win,” he said.
"The interest in the Matt Campbell brand is staggering, I have never seen so much interest in a young driver in my time in motorsport.
"Matt has outgrown our Porsche Cup team and it is time for him to step up. There is a lot of interest for him to drive in the V8s and also some interest from Europe.”
He debuted as a co-driver with Todd Kelly in a Nissan at the enduro rounds this year. Campbell will be based overseas next year if he is chosen for a heavily subsidised spot in the Porsche Super Cup in Europe and America, a support event for the Formula One Grand Prix.
"He competed in Germany a month ago in the Porsche World Junior Driver Shoot-out for the one spot in the super cup but we won't find out which driver has been chosen to the end of November,” McElrea said.
"The shoot-out put the drivers in the same cars to select the fastest and most consistent and judge them on marketability and ability to work with a new team.”
The McElrea team boss said Campbell had the ability to drive a car to the absolute limit and not make mistakes.
"I have never seen a kid drive so quick early in his career,” McElrea said.
"A lot of young drivers make a lot of mistakes while they are learning.”
