MENTAL issues are illnesses no-one wants to talk about, according to Warwick Hospital clinical nurse Ane-Katrina Cox.

Tomorrow will see National Mental Health Week kick off across the Southern Downs region, in a bid to raise awareness of those struggling with their mental health.

"No-one is scared to talk about cancer, but a lot of people are scared to talk about mental health problems," Ms Cox said.

"We are trying to break down the stigma, and let people know that there is hope and you don't have to do it alone."

"My inner superpower" is the theme for the week-long initiative, which aims to send the message that staying healthy means looking after yourself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

"A lot of people think that mental health issues are just things like schizophrenia, but there are actually a range of things like dementia," Ms Cox said.

"People diagnosed with major medical problems also often develop mental issues as a result."

Ms Cox said the first step to help someone that may be affected by mental health issues is to talk to them about it.

"If you know a person that is not coping well with something, ask if they are okay," she said.

"Just sitting down and talking to someone can make a huge difference."

Displays for Mental Health Week will be set up throughout the Warwick Hospital and at the public library from Sunday, October 6, to Sunday, October 13.

There will also be a morning tea at the hospital in celebration of National Hat Day on Friday, which raises funds for mental health research.

In Stanthorpe, there will be a 7am Tai Chi class on Thursday in the Main Street Piazza, followed by a barbecue breakfast.
