Ripped robbers bungle burglary

BODY-CONSCIOUS bandits were caught trying to steal 19 tubs of protein powder during an early morning break-in at a Hervey Bay sports store.

After smashing a front window at Sport First on Boat Harbour Drive about 3am on Saturday, the ripped robbers began loading the protein powder containers into two shopping trolleys.

But their attempts came unstuck when patrolling police officers saw them mid-way through the burglary.

The would-be thieves fled and abandoned the shopping trolleys containing the protein powder, a dietary supplement commonly used by bodybuilders.

Depending on the brand, large tubs of protein powder can be sold for about $200.

Police searched the surrounding area but failed to locate the people involved.

All 19 tubs of protein powder were returned to the store unopened.

It is understood no other items were stolen.

Forensic Services police combed the scene on Saturday morning in an attempt to locate fingerprints and collect further evidence.

Police are asking anyone with information or who witnessed the break-in attempt to contact them on (07) 4123 8111 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
