Gone mad: Leyburn’s Royal Hotel manager Chris Latus is perplexed as to what the pub will like once it’s been the victim of Shane Webcke’s bet.

Pub to be desecrated

IT all started with two men, a bet, cans of paint, a jersey and a rugby league game.

The flutter was between Leyburn ledged and former Brisbane Bronco Shane Webcke and Matty Johns who both watched the Newcastle Knights defeat the Broncos last week.

The loss meant one thing for Webcke’s Royal Hotel in Leyburn: “desecration”.

“When the bet was made I thought two things,” he said.

“One: the Broncos would win. Two: He would never come to Queensland and paint the pub.

“It’ll be the public desecration of the pub, to be painted in the Knights colours. I’ve seen a mock up of what it’ll look like and it’s horrible.”

The former front rower admitted to “not being the sharpest tool in the shed” when the wager was made as Johns would have merely donned a Broncos jersey and painted his face on the Matty Johns Show if the tables had turned.

“There’s no way I’m paying for it though,” Webcke laughed. “Matty said he’d come up and paint it so he’s coming up tomorrow.”

Johns’ silver fox alter ego Don Kirk, Webcke and television crews will be in Leyburn tomorrow from 10am to oversee the historic pub’s roof coloured a spumante red and blue.

The pending ‘make-over’ has the pub’s manager Chris Latus befuddled.

“It’s going to look ugly,” she laughed.

“The phone has been ringing off the hook from people wanting to know where Leyburn is so they can come and have a look.”
