Red Cross HIPPYS read to Warwick Central reading bug egg
WARWICK Central State School students continue to nurture their reading bug egg, inviting weekly guests to read to it in the school's library.
The egg is the centrepiece of a 10-week reading program and will be "incubated" by the children reading to it.
The latest guest to read to the egg was Shannon Bowe, the state manager of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander strategies and innovations for Red Cross.
Mr Bowe, a former Clifton boy, read to the school egg as part of Red Cross HIPPY Week.
HIPPY (Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters) Week celebrates Red Cross' home-based early learning and parenting program, which has been running locally since last year.
Warwick Red Cross HIPPY co-ordinator Carol Turnbull said the average family in the program spent 10 to 15 minutes a few times a week doing educational activities.
"It can easily fit into daily life," she said.
Local HIPPY program members Alinta Copper, Katrina Oliver and Julie-Anne Smith, also took turns reading to the egg.
The reading bug program is a partnership between Red Cross and Warwick Central State School. The program will end next month, with a special reading bug hatching day at the school on November 18.
