Push for second cab rank in growing Warwick CBD
TO CATER for a growing population and a Rose City Shoppingworld development and new fresh food precinct nearing completion, a move is in gear to see another taxi rank provided for Warwick cab users.
Warwick Yellow Cabs owner Nancy Miller said she had been pushing for a second rank for more than a decade.
"We've been battling council with no luck at all for a long time,” she said.
"They don't believe it's warranted but I think enough has changed in the CBD to revisit the idea.”
Mrs Miller is proposing a second rank be allocated at the the northern end of the centre, to cater for the potential influx of shoppers and pedestrians in that part of the CBD.
She maintains the current rank, which is sufficient for no more than four cabs, is too small and unsafe in a busy area.
"It's the only rank in the whole country where the cabs are required to back in,” she said.
"There is a lot of pedestrian and vehicular traffic in the area and it's not safe, for the cabbies, motorists or pedestrians.”
Mrs Miller said the request had no financial benefit for the taxi company.
"It just makes sense,” she said.
"For the convenience and safety of the people who use cabs.
"I feel sorry for any seniors who will have to push their trolleys all the way uphill through the centre from Coles to the current rank.”
Southern Downs mayor Tracey Dobie said the council was currently reviewing parking planning across the Warwick CBD.
"The new entrance changes the dynamic of that whole corner of Fitzroy and Palmerin Sts,” she said.
"So the planning team are looking at everything and we'd invite regular users or anyone that has a vested interest to approach council.
"We certainly need more short-term parking and disabled spots for a start - we're very conscious that the completion of the centre will bring a lot more people to that end of the CBD.”
Cr Dobie said the council had absolutely no intention of introducing parking metres in the main streets of either Warwick or Stanthorpe.
"They would totally detract from the country town feel and character that we love,” she said.
Polly McGrath uses cabs a couple of times a week.
"Another rank is a fantastic idea,” she said.
"It will spread the cabs out across the CBD and save people having to walk all that way up to the Grafton St rank.
"It makes a lot of sense.”
Beverley Bevis said she hoped the move would see more taxis on the road.
"It would be handy to see another rank as long as they weren't both empty when you needed a cab,” she said.
"If we had the same amount of cabs servicing each then I say go for it.”
Heidi Davidson said she hoped another rank wouldn't see double the amount of rubbish lying around.
"The amount of food and rubbish dropped at the Grafton St rank is atrocious,” she said.
"There's a bin right there, but nobody seems to want to use it.
"More bins, and more signage and a bit more respect from users and another rank would be handy.”
