COMMENT: Put caution first if you encounter straying dogs

IT IS concerning to reveal today that each week someone in Warwick falls victim to a dog attack.

And more often than not that victim is someone who has been going about their business in a community that generally looks out for itself and each other and is accepted as being safe.

We reveal the incidence of dog attacks when we tell the story of an Allora boy who was bitten by one of two dogs on his way to school.

In seeking to evade an attack by swooping magpies he rode into the path of the dogs.

He received a puncture mark and graze to his calf - enough to draw blood.

He was lucky; it could have been much worse.

We read far too often of dog attacks across the country that terrify, maim and even kill their victims; and sometimes it's the family pet involved.

Southern Downs Regional Council animal control officers are investigating the incident.

Dog bite victims are advised to report any attacks to the animals' owners and local government authorities to prevent further dangers to anyone else.

Although there are more dog attacks than one would expect in this town we need not suddenly think our streets are no longer safe. But caution always is wise.
