Petrol solution involves putting prices online: fuel expert

A FUEL expert has a "simple" solution he thinks would help solve our petrol price woes.

Professor Frank Zumbo, from the University of New South Wales, specialist in competition and consumer law matters and an avid fuel watcher, said the Federal Government had to step in.

"What we really need now is the Federal Government to make it a requirement that all oil companies and major retailers publish their prices of all fuel online," Prof Zumbo said.

"If they publish online, then motorists will be able to buy petrol at the cheapest possible price.

"Then a smart phone app would be developed and the technology would shop around for them."

Prof Zumbo said motorists were being "ripped off" at the pump if they weren't given the opportunity to shop around.

"When you can't plan, you're basically being ambushed to pay the higher price," he said.
