Surprise as Great Barrier Reef is left off top 10 dive sites

GLADSTONE scuba divers can't believe the Great Barrier Reef has been left out of Lonely Planet's top-10 list of the world's top dive sites.

Local dive club member Mark Brookes said the omission was strange, because people came from all over the world to see and dive on the Great Barrier Reef.

"Heron Island has been known as one of the best dive spots in the world," he said.

"It's quite a surprise we didn't get a mention."

Mr Brookes does admit industry development in Gladstone Harbour has caused visibility issues locally out on the reef.

"In the past, Gladstone has had great visibility but industry has stuffed it up. But tourism on the reef is more about up north, anyway."

He said that might be something Queensland Tourism needed to work on.

Mr Brookes, who is also associated with the spearfishing club, invited anyone wanting to give the issue "food for thought" to attend a meeting at Dicey's Irish Pub, on the Dawson Hwy, on Monday from 6.30pm.
