Python kills Rocky Zoo's colourful macaw, Jeannie
A post on the zoo's Facebook page this afternoon says Jeannie had been constricted by a python.
"We are very sad to report the sudden passing of our female blue and gold macaw, Jeannie," the post said.
"Jeannie was very close to our staff here at the zoo and she is going to be missed greatly.
"Jeannie's mate, Jimmy, died when a tree fell on their aviary during Tropical Cyclone Marcia.
"Jeanie escaped injury, but flew away.
"She was located in the Botanic Gardens the next day by our bird keeper, who had such a fantastic rapport with Jeannie that she was able to call Jeannie down out of the tree and return her to a temporary aviary at the zoo.
"Jeannie was being housed in this temporary aviary while awaiting the construction of her new aviary.
"Jeannie was found during early morning checks by our staff. She had been constricted by a python.
"Fly free, Jeannie."
