Queen 'belongs' on notes
FEDERAL LNP Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott wants to keep the Queen in his pocket - literally.
Mr Scott is fired up over reports the Reserve Bank of Australia toyed with the idea of replacing Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the $5 note.
"It seems, by stealth, the republicans have tried to remove the Queen's image from our currency," Mr Scott said.
"What else could they be up to? Surely it's not the Reserve Bank's decision to make.
"I'm stunned the Reserve Bank even contemplated the idea of removing her image from the $5 note."
Mr Scott said he always felt a sense of pride when he reached into his wallet and pulled out a carefully crafted Australian banknote.
"In 1996, Australia became the first country in the world to a have a complete system of polymer (plastic) banknotes, with the innovative technology entirely developed in Australia," he said.
"I am very patriotic and I feel too many symbols over time have been altered, like the removal of the Crown from public buildings, and any more tinkering would further diminish our historical link to the Commonwealth.
