Queens Park fields closed for upgrading work
FOOTBALL: Warwick Wolves senior football co-ordinator Rob Davey has urged members of the public to avoid walking on the Queens Park football and cricket fields after major work on the ground surface.
"This week Green Options have aerated, top dressed and fertilised the fields,” he said.
"The fields will now be closed until November 4. The football and cricket clubs ask the community to be mindful of the work done this week and help with the enforcement of the field closure.
"The fields will be watered a few times daily in the next six weeks so the surface will be continually moist.
"Any use or traffic will compromise the quality of the finished product.”
Davey said club funds and a $40,000 grant from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund had provided finance for the project.
While the football season is over, Warwick Wolves academy teams are preparing for the Gold Coast Cup and are currently training on Hamilton Oval at Warwick State High School.
Warwick Cricket Association secretary Greg Payne said at a recent cricket meeting, members couldn't remember the last time the fields were top dressed.
"Good rain will help in the next few weeks,” he said.
"At this year's Australia Day Cricket Carnival, I noticed bare patches near the wicket where the football goals had been situated and the work will be great for the carnival and mean less chance of injury.”
Warwick District Football Association president Karen Welsh said the work on the fields had been arranged by Wolves player/groundsman Cameron Davey with support from volunteers.
Works have also been undertaken to allow recycled water from Southern Downs Regional Council to be used for field irrigation in future.
