Queensland enjoys success on day 3 at National Polocrosse Championships
POLOCROSSE: Queensland had four wins and two losses on day 3 of the National Polocrosse Championships at Albury.
In the open men’s competition, Queensland won 27-20 against Victoria to make it two wins from two games.
Captain Cameron Shepherd said the whole team was coming along well.
On Tuesday, New South Wales beat Victoria 20-15 but Shepherd is not reading too much into the difference in margins of the Queensland and New South Wales victories against Victoria.
“Victoria got a good start on Tuesday before New South Wales started to peg them back,” Shepherd said.
“New South Wales are the favourites but Western Australia aren’t too far away.”
Queensland plays Western Australia on Friday in the men’s competition and then New South Wales on Saturday.
“If we win one of the two games, we will be close to securing a finals berth for Sunday,” Shepherd said.
Yesterday, New South Wales beat Western Australia 25-17 in open men’s competition which means Queensland will secure a finals spot with a win against Western Australia on Friday.
One of the best games of the championship so far was the Queensland women’s game against Western Australia, which the Maroons lost 18-16 on Monday.
Western Australia won the national title in Darwin in 2014 but are without Lauren Sillitoe (nee Cant) who has moved to Queensland (Cunningham club) and is captain of the Maroons this week in Albury.
Sillitoe is in a team with sisters Ella Elks and Ryle Waugh, from Cunningham, the Hafey sisters, Beth and Emma, from Tansey, Sydnee Johnson and Christie Edwards.
In other day 3 games, Queensland beat Western Australia 18-13 in U21 women’s and it was Queensland on top of Western Australia in U16 boys 27-14.
After a win early in the nationals, Queensland went down 17-13 to New South Wales inU16 girls but can still make the final with a good finish to the round robins.
Queensland beat Western Australia 24-7 in U21 men and went down 16-15 in U21 mixed to New South Wales.
In the men’s masters exhibition grade, Queensland lost 21-11 to New South Wales.
The nationals go to Sunday.
