Queensland Police hunting for failed bank robber

POLICE are hunting for a man who tried to rob a Coolangatta bank at knifepoint.

On the afternoon of October 6 a man entered a bank in Griffith St armed with a knife, demanding money from the bank teller.

But the teller refused to hand over the money and the man aborted the robbery, leaving the business on foot.

No one was injured during the incident.

Police are looking for a man described as Caucasian in appearance, in his 30s, around 180cm tall, with a medium build and dark hair.

Tweed resident Anthony Lacrosse was heading out to dinner at Aztec restaurant on the night of the robbery when he noticed a police officer looking through a bin in Showcase shopping centre's basement car park area.

"I didn't see the robbery I just turned up there for tea at Aztec for my nephew's 18th, hopped out of the car and saw the cops," he said.

"One forensic officer had gloves on and was going through a bin at the time and they had all this stuff on the ground on cardboard.

"There was shoes, pants, a shirt, jumper, a pair of dark glasses and a decent sized knife with a black handle and a pretty long pointed blade. Then they started to bag all items into paper evidence bags."

Police investigations into the matter are continuing and anyone with information should call CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000. Callers can remain anonymous.
