Queensland Polocrosse Championships begin

POLOCROSSE: Warwick and Cunningham will field 15 teams between them in the Queensland Polocrosse Championships at Wandoan starting tomorrow.

Warwick and Tansey will each field eight teams this weekend, the most in the championships. The two clubs with the most teams are two of the favourites to meet in the open final.

The Warwick 1 team for the open competition will include the Shepherd brothers, Cameron and Stuart, Braydon Beck, Kris Lynas, Anthony Wells and Tom Cobon. Wells, Cobon and Beck are all still eligible for under-21 polocrosse.

In the juniors, Warwick will field one team and one section will combine with another club. At the IOR Petroleum Rose Bowl last month, Cunningham beat Warwick by one goal in the final and the two clubs could meet again at Wandoan.

Cunningham will field seven teams as it aims to win a third successive mixed title in A grade.

Australia Gold team member Ryle Waugh is not playing as her horse pulled up lame after she played in the national ladies squad games at the national squad challenge at the Rose Bowl.

The Cunningham mixed team will include Australian squad member Steve Nolan, Anthony O'Leary, Sam Cook, Jess O'Leary, Carly Cooper and Jodie Ezzy.

Games will be played on six fields starting tomorrow at Wandoan.

There are 77 teams in open, mixed and junior competitions.

The teams will be divided into grades once the draw is finalised. Most of the finals will be on Sunday.

While there will be no teams named after the championships. Queensland selectors will be watching the play at the carnival as they will be already thinking about next year's Barastoc Interstate Series in April in Warwick and the 2018 nationals in Perth.

The state championships will be officially opened by Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Paul McVeigh at noon Saturday.

McVeigh himself played rugby union for Queensland Country so has plenty of experience on the sporting field.
