Queensland team prevails at two-day shoot
BALLANDEAN Clay Target Club saw near-perfect conditions for its annual two-day shoot on the weekend of October 17 and 18.
About 120 shooters from across Queensland and New South Wales made their way to Ballandean for a weekend of fierce competition, state pride, and the popular Wilshire and Co 1000.
Conditions on Saturday proved a little challenging at times with blustery winds.
The double barrel saw quite a lengthy shoot-off, with Dan Johnson taking the title from Daryl Stevens.
Daryl Stevens continued with his good form to take out the pointscore after shooting-off with Col Witt.
Only two possibles were posted in the double rise with Mark Davis prevailing, shooting a creditable 40/40.
With dawn breaking on Sunday morning the winds eased up and shooting commenced nice and early, with shoot-offs held to finalise the final positions in both the Queensland and NSW teams.
John Reid started the day strongly to take out the 50T combination from Alex Smith.
The final individual event for the day was the much coveted Wilshire and Co 1000, with shooters lining up to win a cool $1000 for first place.
With only a couple of possibles on the board, David Edmonds and Justin Hitchens hit the layouts to shoot-off, Edmonds coming away with the $1000.
Hitchens collected second and $500, while third went to John Lee, and William Saul was fourth.
With the individual events finalised and the high guns worked out, the 24 men and six women selected from the pointscore event stepped out onto the layouts to battle for state pride in the Ballandean Teams Match - Queensland v NSW.
The Queensland open team of Alex Smith, Rodney Woodrow, Daryl Stevens, Scott Willmann, Jackson Willmann, Col Witt, Phil Keller, Mark Davis, David Conduit, Tony Rogers, Frank Musumeci and Clayton Cusack was the decisive winner, much to the delight of a strong Queensland crowd.
Much to the disappointment of the Queenslanders, it was not to be a clean sweep with the NSW team of Helen Overton, Courtney Watt and Leah Beaumont taking out the ladies' teams match. Graeme and Neil Yates together with Hunts Shooting Supplies made a special presentation, kindly donating a slab of ammunition to every junior shooter competing over the weekend. The generosity of these individuals is overwhelming, and greatly appreciated.
The Ballandean Clay Target Club thanked each and every competitor, visitor, and supporter who made the trip to
Stanthorpe for the weekend to enjoy the friendly atmosphere and unique hospitality at the 'Coolest Clay Target Club in Queensland'.
Ballandean Clay Target Club thanked its sponsors for the weekend, particularly Wilshire and Co for its continued support of clay target shooting, Leppington Speedy Seedlings (Leppington NSW); Beretta Australia; Shamrock Marketing (Brisbane Markets); Ralph Johns Pty Ltd (Sydney Markets); Nioa Trading/Eley Hawk; Terranova Seeds; Power Tynan; Queensland Country Credit Union, Granite Belt Fruit Freighters; Corsivia; John Vichie Firearms and GB Ammunition for making the weekend a great success.
