Queensland temperatures plummet and more cold to come

THE plunge in temperatures over the weekend may have prompted a rush for beanies and jumpers, but it was not a record-breaking cold.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Andrew Cameron said most of southern Queensland had experienced its coldest night since August 2013.

"The lowest minimum was at Kingaroy which recorded 0.4 degrees, which is about 7 or 8 degrees below their average May minimum temperature," he told Fairfax

"It's not record-breaking though... the record cold temperature in Kingaroy for May is minus 3.9, and that was in 1957."

Brisbane Airport recorded 8.9 degrees on Sunday morning, with 9.3 degrees at Archerfield and 7.5 at Amberley, all significantly below May averages.

The bureau is forecasting colder conditions for most of the week.

"The high over the Southern Ocean will shift east towards southeastern Australia, maintaining a cool and dry airmass over much of Queensland.

"Fine and mostly sunny conditions are therefore expected across much of the state with patchy morning frosts about the Maranoa and southeastern interior,'' the outlook for Tuesday says.

"Isolated shower activity should continue about the very far northern tropics where a moist onshore wind flow persists.

"Much of the central and southern Queensland will experience minimum temperatures well below the May average.
