Quick thinking saves life of drowning diver

BYSTANDERS who jumped into action without hesitation have helped save a life after a man suffered a seizure while scuba diving this morning.

The 48-year-old Sydney man was was diving at Ex-HMAS Brisbane near Mooloolaba when he was pulled unconscious from the water.

Queensland Health Sunshine Coast operations supervisor Lorenz Kleinberg said crew on the dive boat performed CPR on the man for about 30 seconds, but he came back "very quickly".

The man - who is believed to have some diving experience - was transported by boat to the Kawana Surf Club and then to a nearby park by ambulance.

The RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter was tasked to La Balsa Park on Harbour Pde at Buddina about 11am to reports of a suspected drowning.

Queensland Ambulance Service crews treated the man on scene for about 40 minutes before he was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane Hospital in a serious, yet stable condition.

Mr Kleinberg praised the efforts of the boat crew as well as paramedics both on the ground and in the air.

"(He) had been given excellent first aide by the dive boat crew," he said.

"The patient was on oxygen and being monitored.

"We were all very grateful that he was alive..."

It is not known if the man has a pre-existing condition that causes seizures, but Mr Kleinberg said investigations were ongoing in hospital.
