Lest we forget: Warwick quilter sews in their honour
WARWICK servicemen are among those to be honoured in a special Anzac centenary quilt exhibition in Brisbane next week.
The Lest We Forget - 100 Years, 100 Quilts exhibition will feature the work of Warwick quilter Barbara Cutmore when it is displayed at next week's Brisbane Craft and Quilt Fair.
The talented textile artist made the 25cm quilt in honour of local servicemen and close relatives.
"The gentlemen are Dawson Wilson - my husband's uncle - Alwyn (Gus) Mauch whom my husband was named after, and last but not least Gordon Deveney who is a distant relation, but more importantly just a lovely man," she said.
The subtle black and white quilt is embroidered with the words We Will Remember Them and Lest We Forget and features an appliquéd poppy.
For Mrs Cutmore making the quilt was "just a bit of fun".
"I suppose overall it took about five hours, but that is just a guess. Sometimes you get lost in the task," she said. "My daughter made one too."
For Mrs Cutmore creativity comes naturally.
"I've always sewn - I used to make the kids' clothes and I made my daughter's wedding dress," she said.
"About 15 or 20 years ago I went on to quilting."
Mrs Cutmore has also exhibited at Warwick's iconic Airing of the Quilts event.
The special quilt exhibition will feature at the Brisbane Convention Centre from Wednesday to Sunday.
