Race day romps in a winner
SUNNY skies, cold drinks and old friends ensured yesterday's ever-popular Boxing Day races went off without a hitch.
After last year's washed-out meet and a season that was filled with weather troubles, Turf Club president Jim Costello had been crossing his fingers for great weather.
And he got it.
"We were a little worried about the weather but it turned very well and we have had a great crowd," he said.
A number of cancelled meetings had a financial impact on the club but Mr Costello said yesterday's successful meet had them back on track and looking forward to the next one.
"This meeting certainly has helped and provided it will come through financially, which I think we will, it will be a big relief for us," he said.
"To get a meeting of this quality again in February will be quite a load off our shoulders," he said.
Although he didn't have definite figures as of yesterday afternoon, Mr Costello said he estimated about 2500 had passed through the gates during yesterday's event.
"The track was in excellent condition and they all ran fast times with no major incidents. That's all you can ask for really," he said.
