Race day set to be spectacular
TURF club members say Tuesday's nominations for the Warwick Credit Union Warwick Cup have produced what could be "one of the greatest races in living memory".
With 138 nominations and acceptances due today, member Nick Inmon said the fields looked outstanding.
"One of Brisbane's leading trainers, Liam Birchley, has nominated Pepperwood, which is the winner of the listed Bernborough Handicap in Brisbane in December for the Cup," he said.
"The seven-year-old Easy Rocking Gelding, if accepted, will go in as top weight and really condense the rest of the field.
"This will make this race one of the most highly contested in years."
Pepperwood has a local connection, with his sire Easy Rocking standing at Wattle Brae Stud at Nobby.
Dalby trainer Gilbert Baker has nominated up-and-coming stayer Anchor Bolt for the time-honoured race.
The Anabaa gelding won the Dalby Cup and one in Brisbane last start.
While Ballina trainer Danny Bowen won't bring last year's winner Bradfield back to defend his title, the New South Wales trainers will be represented by leading Coffs Harbour trainer Brett "Bart" Bellemy.
Bellemy will bring his handy gelding Rage and Rave, who disappointed in the Coffs Cup but has since been at the top of his game with a second to Brisbane winner Pimpala Lass at Ballina.
Mr Inmon said the track was in sensational condition and should stand up well for the races.
