Old boys combine with HQ on track

TWO Warwick old boys got together for round three of the Queensland Motor Racing Championships at Morgan Park Raceway at the weekend.

Gary Bonwick and Peter Marshall both drove at Morgan Park in the old dirt track days and combined at the weekend, Marshall as the owner and Bonwick as the driver.

Bonwick moved to Toowoomba 20 years ago and Marshall headed to the big city 12 years ago.

A Brisbane resident, Marshall drives his HQ Holden at Queensland Raceway and Lakeside but gets Bonwick to drive the HQ at Morgan Park as it is a CAMS meeting.

They started with two thirds on Saturday after experiencing some car troubles in early races and finished with two seconds on Sunday.

“Kev (Bonwick, Gary's father) fixed up the distributor,” Marshall said.

“He is our secret weapon, we take him everywhere we go.”

Gary said his dad certainly knew how to tune a HQ Holden.

At the weekend, there was some friendly rivalry between Bonwick and his nephew Jamie Furness.

“I keep telling him he has to be kind to his godfather,” Bonwick said.

“Jamie is improving all the time as a driver and is currently number one in Queensland in the class.”

Furness won both Saturday races and had two thirds yesterday in the HQ class.

The championships, organised by the Queensland Racing Drivers Club, attracted 150 vehicles.
