Man and 7yo girl stung by jellyfish in Whitsundays

UPDATE: About 2pm this afternoon a seven-year-old Home Hill girl was also airlifted to Mackay Base Hospital after being stung on the cheek by an irukandji while swimming in the Whitsundays.

The symptoms of irukandji syndrome are often severe and include headache, backache, muscle pains, chest and abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, profuse sweating, anxiety, hypertension, tachycardia and pulmonary edema.

An RACQ CQ Rescue spokeswoman said from November to May was the high risk season for irukandjis which were prevalent in the waters around the mainland, islands and even out on the reef.

The rescue helicopter had been tasked to transfer five patients last year who'd been stung by potentially deadly jellyfish and a total of 43 patients since 2008, she said.

To be tasked to transfer two patients with irukandji stings in the same day was simply incredible and very unfortunate, the spokeswoman said.

Other tasks for the rescue helicopter today included a search around Eimeo after the accidental activation of an emergency beacon by a vessel at the boat ramp.

EARLIER: A 27-year-old man is in Mackay Base Hospital after he was stung by a jellyfish while snorkelling in waters off Hayman Island.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the man was stung on the back by a suspected irukandji.

He was airlifted to the hospital by RACQ CQ Rescue.

RACQ CQ Rescue and a paramedic are en route to Hayman Island to treat a patient who may have been stung by an irukandji jellyfish.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said they received the call to attend just after 8am.

No patient details have been recorded yet.
