Rain and cricket mix in first two fixture weeks
TUESDAY TANTRUM with Gerard Walsh
HERE we go again, a cricket season with rain.
Forty years ago, successive weeks of cricket were washed out fairly often.
With plenty of drought times in recent decades, it isn't often there are no games finished in a fortnight but that has happened already this year.
The first week it was wet wickets from rain on the Friday and then it was the rain during the weekend.
Gavan Scheiwe is the leading batsman so far this season with 48 for Allora in 9-138 against Wheatvale.
I've seen the enthusiasm of Jayden O'Brien in junior cricket and on the weekend he took 3-15 for Wheatvale.
Mark Locke took 3-10 off 2.4 overs and Morgan Gilchrist 3-27 for a Redbacks team which was 1-50 off seven overs chasing 109 against Rascals when the rain came.
The big news out Inglewood way were the two new paceman in the Maryvale-Condamine team
Fergus Connolly is a gap student at Scots PGC who played in England last year and he took 2-21 off seven overs in his debut for Maryvale-Condamine in an Inglewood score of 94.
New Clintonvale resident Andrew McConnell took 1-9 off seven overs, outstanding economy in his first game since playing in the Ipswich competition last season.
His bowling looks even better when one of the town's most economical bowlers Dave Walker conceded 13 runs in five overs and took two wickets.
Last year's grand finalists Maryvale was in trouble at 3-21 but the Duckworth Lewis system for wet games is not used here.
Getting some cricket in this weekend will be crucial for the representative selectors as round 1 of Mitchell and Davis Shield is on November 5.
It is a while since Warwick has won a representative competition but the Davis Shield performance last season gave officials a lot of enthusiasm for the future.
