Rain brings polocrosse to a halt
THE first carnival of the Queensland Polocrosse Series was called off at the weekend due to rain and some very soggy fields.
The event, held at Killarney Showground, was called to a halt at lunch time on Saturday.
Warwick polocrosse club member Warwick Fraser was one of many local players registered to compete at the event.
"Some teams managed to get in two games and others managed to get in one game," he said.
Fraser said the wet conditions meant there was not a large crowd of spectators but that did not impact on the game play too much.
"It was the first game of the season and everyone and their horses were just keen to get out and play," he said.
"But the rain just kept coming down."
Fraser said the Warwick teams performed well in the games they played.
"Warwick did have a good start yesterday," he said.
"We have three or four players who have come back after a number of years off and they are playing really well."
The carnival is a good test in the lead-up to the Barastoc Interstate Series and Shell Cup at Morgan Park on April 17 to 19.
"We have been practising since January and everyone is really looking forward to the Barastoc," Fraser said.
"There are teams coming from Western Australia to compete this year."
Another highlight of the event will be watching the Australian team play.
"The Australian team will be in action at the Barastoc, fine tuning for World Cup," Fraser said.
Fraser said he expected the Warwick, Killarney and Cunningham teams to give the visiting teams a run for their money.
