Rain dampens finals
UPDATE: RAIN has hampered the scheduling of matches in the Under 13 Boys' State Hockey Championships at the Warwick hockey centre in Queens Park.
Due to waterlogged fields and the continuing rain all of today's quarter final matches have had to be rescheduled and played out on the turf, rather than the grass.
Games started at 7:30 this morning instead of 8:30 and are running until 7pm tonight.
Full results will be published in Saturday's Daily News.
5AM: UNRELENTING rain played havoc at the Under-13 Boys State Hockey Championships yesterday, forcing them to reschedule all the games.
The officials dubbed the fields at Queen's Park unsafe yesterday and all games were played out on the turf instead.
This meant postponing the goalkeeping and coaching workshops scheduled for yesterday afternoon.
The chilly weather even proved too much for parents and families with the numbers of spectators significantly less then the first few days of the tournament.
A Bureau of Meteorology spokesman said 7mm of rain fell in Warwick yesterday.
"The rain will ease off by this afternoon with a possible drizzle on Friday," he said.
The mercury only climbed from eight to 12 degrees yesterday and was expected to do the same again today.
The spokesman said wind would make things cooler.
"There is a low over the Fraser Island coast at the moment which is causing strong south-easterly winds," he said.
"It will switch to a south-westerly for the weekend."
He said it would be cold for the rest of the week but fine for the hockey finals.
"The rain will be gone by the end of Friday and it will be a fine weekend," he said.
